Do You Need Cash in Muscat?

Yes, for souq shopping and smaller establishments. Muscat is moderately card-friendly. Hotels, malls, and modern restaurants accept cards reliably. Mutrah Souq vendors, smaller local restaurants (cafeterias), and neighborhood shops prefer cash. Muscat is less card-friendly than Dubai or Doha but improving. Carry OMR 10–20 when exploring.

Where You Will Need Cash

Mutrah Souq vendors (frankincense, silver, textiles, souvenirs). Local cafeterias serving Omani and Indian food. Some taxi drivers (though OTaxi app takes cards). Small shops in Ruwi and residential areas. Fruit juice stands and street food vendors. Public bus fares. Parking meters in some areas.

Where Cards Work Fine

Hotels at all levels. Malls (Muscat Grand Mall, City Centre Muscat, Oman Avenues Mall). Al Mouj (The Wave) restaurants and shops. Qurum restaurants and cafes. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (free, no payment needed). Royal Opera House (tickets by card online). Supermarkets (Lulu Hypermarket, Al Fair, Carrefour). Petrol stations.

Paying by Card in Muscat

Card acceptance has improved significantly in Muscat. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most modern establishments. Amex has limited acceptance (international hotels and a few upscale spots). Contactless payments work at newer terminals. The city is spread along the coast, so you will likely need a mix of card and cash depending on which area you are visiting.

Mixed acceptance

Mutrah & Old Muscat

The historic heart of Muscat. Mutrah Souq is the main attraction: frankincense, silver khanjars (daggers), textiles, and Omani sweets. Most vendors are cash-only and expect haggling. A few larger shops accept cards. Mutrah Corniche restaurants are mixed. The National Museum (OMR 5, card accepted) and Sultan's Palace (exterior only, free) are nearby. Bring OMR 15–25.

High card acceptance

Qurum

A popular residential and commercial area. Qurum Natural Park (free) and Qurum Beach are nearby. Restaurants along the main road accept cards. Shatti Al Qurum has upscale dining and hotels (InterContinental, Crowne Plaza) that are fully card-friendly. The Opera Galleria mall accepts cards throughout.

High card acceptance

Al Mouj (The Wave)

Muscat's modern waterfront development. Restaurants at the Marsa Plaza, cafes, and shops all accept cards. The Al Mouj Golf Course accepts cards. Kempinski Hotel and other properties are fully card-friendly. A good area for card-only dining and leisure. Similar to The Pearl in Doha.

Limited acceptance

Ruwi

Muscat's commercial district and home to a large expat community. Ruwi High Street has affordable Indian, Pakistani, and Filipino restaurants (meals OMR 1–2, mostly cash). Gold shops accept cards for larger purchases. Exchange offices cluster here with competitive rates. A good area for cheap eats. Bring OMR 10–15.

High card acceptance

Muscat Hills & Al Ghubra

Modern commercial areas with malls and restaurants. Muscat Grand Mall and Oman Avenues Mall are fully card-friendly. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (free, no payment needed) is in the Ghubra area. Restaurants and cafes along the highway service roads accept cards.

Paying for Taxis, Buses & Getting Around

OTaxi & Ride-Hailing

OTaxi is Oman's official ride-hailing app (card or cash). Rides are metered and transparent. A ride from Mutrah to Qurum costs OMR 3–5. Uber and Careem do not operate in Oman. Some traditional taxis (orange and white) cruise the streets and are cash-only. Always agree on the fare before getting in an unmetered taxi.

Mwasalat Buses

Mwasalat operates Muscat's public bus network. Fares range from OMR 0.200 to OMR 0.500. Pay with a Mwasalat bus card (buy at terminals) or cash (exact change helpful). Routes connect the airport, Ruwi, Mutrah, and Qurum. Buses are air-conditioned and modern but service is infrequent in some areas.

Car Rental

Muscat is a spread-out city and renting a car is highly recommended for day trips and getting around efficiently. Rental costs OMR 10–20 per day from agencies at the airport (Hertz, Europcar, local agencies). Petrol is cheap at OMR 0.220 per liter. Roads are excellent. International driving permits are accepted. Pay by card at all rental agencies.

Airport Transfers

Muscat International Airport (MCT) is 30 km from old Muscat. OTaxi: OMR 8–12 to central Muscat (card or cash). Mwasalat bus: Route 1 to Ruwi (OMR 0.500, cash or bus card). Hotel shuttle: many hotels offer airport pickup (arrange in advance). Car rental: available at the airport terminal.

Tipping in Muscat

The Oman guide covers general norms. In Muscat, restaurants sometimes add a service charge. If not, 10% is appreciated for good service. Hotel porters: OMR 0.500–1 per bag. Taxi drivers: round up to the nearest half-rial. Tour guides: OMR 2–5 per person for a half-day trip. Tip in cash.
